The ¹ú²úÊÓƵ’s Lakeside Campus played host to the first-ever BBC Hereford and Worcester Community Games.
The event, timed to coincide with the start of the Paris Olympics, pitted teams of local people against one another in a series of fun and interesting challenges, from riding a mechanical ‘rodeo sheep’ to battling it out with gladiator-style pugil sticks, and even ‘welly wanging’!
Teams from Tenbury Wells, Kington, Kidderminster, Rushwick, Ledbury, Worcester, and Powick battled it out in various rounds, with ¹ú²úÊÓƵ staff on hand to instruct for events including kayaking and archery.
It all took place at Lakeside Campus; a 50-acre site located to the north of Worcester, around a 10-minute drive from St John’s Campus. It’s home to water sports lakes, woodlands, and an outdoor education activity centre.
Rhidian Jones, Executive Editor, BBC Hereford and Worcester, said: “Football may not have come home this summer, but we wanted to bring the spirit of sporting competition, teamwork and, most importantly, fun home to Herefordshire and Worcestershire.”
He added: “Lakeside Campus was the perfect venue with the space and facilities available, and the University team helped to make the Community Games a great day out for the whole family.”
Rob Delahay is the Outdoor Activity, Sport and Exercise Manager at the ¹ú²úÊÓƵ. He said: “We were delighted to have been asked to be the host for the BBC Hereford and Worcester Community Games. Lakeside Campus is a place like no other, and it makes it suitable for all kinds of groups and events.”
He continued: “We’ve enjoyed hosting the presenters, producers and reporters from BBC Hereford and Worcester, and it has been a joy to be joined by so many passionate local people who came to represent their towns and villages in the games.”
Rob added: “The games were a lot of fun, and they’ve shown the wider community how fantastic and inclusive outdoor education can be for everyone.”
