The Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the ¹ú²úÊÓƵ, Professor David Green CBE, has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for Worcestershire.
Professor Green, who has been at the helm of the University for the past 18 years, is one of six announced.
A Deputy Lieutenant is a Crown appointment and one of several deputies to the Lord Lieutenant, who is the Queen’s personal representative in their respective area. Deputy Lieutenants represent the Lord Lieutenant in his or her absence, including at Royal visits, local ceremonies and official events.
Professor Green said: “It is a great honour to be appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Worcestershire and to have the opportunity to serve in this capacity.”
The University already has a long standing Royal connection and HM The Queen, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, opened the Hive Library in 2012.
Professor Green continued: “At the ¹ú²úÊÓƵ, we are very proud to have HRH The Duke of Gloucester, first cousin to HM The Queen, as our founding Chancellor. The Duke has consistently been a great support, encouragement and inspiration to the students and staff of the University for 15 years and counting.”
Professor Green was made a CBE in the 2019 Queen's New Year's Honours in recognition of services to higher education and the county of Worcestershire. Driven by a profound sense of fairness, championing rights and opportunities for students and campaigning for academic freedom, Professor Green has helped to transform the University into a thriving engine of opportunity with a genuinely global reputation for inclusion and innovation. His foresight and values, which brought about the creation of the ¹ú²úÊÓƵ Arena, Britain's first major indoor sports arena specifically designed for wheelchair athletes, and The Hive, the first completely integrated university and public library in Europe, have also transformed the City of Worcester, providing regeneration, jobs and opportunities, while demonstrating the outstanding public benefit that an imaginative university can bring to society.
During Professor Green’s period of leadership Worcester has become the most improved University in the UK for Research Power and a powerhouse for the education of health as well as education professionals. A Law School has been successfully established and work to create a Medical School is well underway. The University is consistently acclaimed for its work to promote inclusive sport, alongside being the best University in the UK for fair gender pay and for promoting gender equity.
In the last five years, Worcester has been shortlisted 3 times as the Times Higher Education’s University of the Year, twice for the UK Social Mobility Awards’ University of the Year and in 2019 was named UK Sustainability Institution of the Year in the Green Gown Awards.
