The 'HR Excellence in Research' award is given to an organisation which has a robust and public implementation strategy for supporting the career development and management of its researchers.

Dr John-Paul Wilson, Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor Research at the University, said: "We are delighted that the European Commission has recognised the support which we offer our researchers and the work we are doing to develop this further. This award underlines the excellent research environment within the ¹ú²úÊÓƵ."

"We have made very significant progress in driving forward our research in the last decade and particularly in the last five years " this is clearly reflected in the outcomes of the Research Excellence Framework 2014, which showed us to be the most improved university in the UK on the measure of research power. We have excellent research and researchers in impactful areas such as Dementia Studies, adult mental health, atmospheric science, biomedical science and domestic violence and abuse. It is vital that we have in place the policies and practices to ensure the effective delivery of our research and to ensure that our researchers continue to develop in their role and this award shows this is very much the case."

The UK process for the award acknowledges an institution's alignment with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for Recruitment. It incorporates both the QAA Quality Code for Higher Education and the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, and includes ongoing national evaluation and benchmarking.
